Hard Work Is Worth It

Leticia Jones stands in front of Fallerius Hall.

The sky is the limit for Leticia Jones.  She began classes at North Central State College because she wanted to make a positive change in her life.  Working as a hairstylist in Mansfield, an unfortunate injury to her leg made her think about her future and the choices she needed to make.

Soon after, she enrolled at North Central State College.  “NC State College is great.  The professors understand your needs as a student.”  Jones has lupus, an incurable illness that affects the immune system and can be crippling.  However, that never stopped Jones from accomplishing her goals.  She told many of her professors about the disease while enrolled at the college.  Jones says she is grateful for their support, “My instructors helped work with me to make sure I could still attend class and get the education I needed.”

Jones graduated with an associate degree in paralegal studies in 2006.

She did not stop there.  She transferred her credits to Mount Vernon Nazarene University and continued her education to obtain her bachelor’s degree.  “It was an easy transition from North Central State College to Mount Vernon Nazarene University.  All of my credits transferred seamlessly.”

Jones also began working for the United States Department of Defense (DOD) in the Defense Logistics Agency as a supply planner/inventory management specialist.  The Defense Logistics Agency is the DOD’s largest logistics combat support agency, providing worldwide logistics support to the military service as well as several civilian agencies and foreign countries.  She explains, “Sometimes I will get a call from an admiral overseas looking for supplies.  I am the person responsible for providing that information.”

As Jones continued her education, she then graduated from Mount Vernon Nazarene with her master's degree in business administration.

With all of Jones experience at the DOD and now holding her MBA, she knew she is not done yet.  She is currently in the process of finishing her Doctoral Degree at Capella University.

Her advice for students looking to change careers or start something news, “I would tell any student thinking about going to North Central State College to take that chance on yourself, on your future.”  She continues, “It is hard work, but it is worth it in the end.”
