Meet the New Dean of Liberal Arts

As we begin the fall semester at North Central State College, there is a new face in the hallways for you to meet.  David Murray is the new dean of liberal arts at the college.

Murray is no stranger to the struggles of trying to maneuver your way through college.  He says of his childhood in New England, “My upbringing was not an easy one.  In some ways, I was a very non-traditional student because I was on my own and had to put myself through college.”

That’s why one of his major focuses at North Central State College is to make sure it is affordable and accessible for all students.  He says, “Whether it is a first generation or financially disadvantaged student, I really believe in helping them understand the value of an education as an investment in their future.”

Before joining North Central State College, Murray worked as a Professor of Art at Black Hawk College in Moline, IL; Interim Dean of Arts and Humanities at Blackhawk College; Instructor of Art at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, TX; and Instructor at North Texas Community and Junior College Consortium.   He has more than 20 years of college teaching experience.

Murray’s educational background focused on art education.  After working as an instructor for years, he chose to turn to the administrative side of higher education.  He says, “I realized that I saw the impact and the value, as well as, the reward of taking on some of the harder challenges in administration.” He continues, “In instruction, I knew the reward and could see the reward every day, but it gave me some time to realize that I really have a passion for helping people gain an education, particularly when I had to go through the difficulties that I had to go through.”

Murray is looking forward to working with the staff and the students one-on-one.  Murray says, “This position is about creative problem solving, which is my wheelhouse as an art instructor, so I bring a willingness to engage in learning and with the creative challenges of associating how things work and how things can become more efficient.”

Murray earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Art from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX and Master’s in Fine Arts degree in Art at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL.

He and his wife Donna, along with their son George, will be settling down in the Mansfield area.
