Jessica Keith at Kehoe Center

Take Advantage of Every Opportunity

Jessica Keith, a government sales representative for Gorman-Rupp Pumps, is a 2015 graduate of North Central State College with an associate degree in business management.  “Attending North Central State College was a great opportunity for me,” she said.  “The professors were helpful and knew me on a personal basis.  I think the biggest thing was how available and willing everyone was to help get me through to get my degree.”

When Keith was deciding where to attend college, she looked at North Central State College because it was in her hometown.  “I live 10 minutes away, so it was close to home.”  She began taking business management classes in hopes of one day finding a position with a large corporation.

While at North Central State College, Jessica Keith chose to explore the numerous internships available through the college.   She suggests that students thinking about getting involved in the internship program should get out of their comfort zone and meet new people. “Get out there and network, that’s the biggest thing that’s going to help you advance within the job market.”  She continues, “It helps you get out there and meet new people.  Then you will be able to look back and say, ‘Oh yes.  That did help me!  I’m glad I did that!’”

During her time on campus, Keith was part of the honors program, in which students design projects and research under the mentorship of faculty members.  As part of the program, students are encouraged to interact with the community outside of the classroom.

Keith’s project brought her to Gorman-Rupp for the first time. The company is well known in the region and around the world.  Gorman-Rupp makes pumps and fluid controls used in construction, sewage treatment, agriculture and firefighting, as well as for military and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) purposes.

“I went for half a day, job shadowed and did a project based on what I had learned.”

Once she graduated, she began her career in an entry-level position at Allied Restaurant Service, a heating, cooling and refrigeration company in Mansfield.  Then the opportunity came for her to take a position at Gorman-Rupp.   “I put in my resume, and when the quality manager, who I job shadowed, heard about my interested in the job, he put in a recommendation.  That was a huge step for me. It helped me get into the sales department at Gorman-Rupp.”

Keith is now pursuing her bachelor’s degree attending Franklin University.  She says the transition was simple, “The admissions process was easy since NC State College and Franklin University have a great partnership.”  She is currently taking classes to obtain her degree in accounting while working full time at Gorman-Rupp.
