Andrea Johnson — Accounting
Andrea Johnson is the newest insurance agent at Blackstone Insurance in Lexington. She received her Property and Casualty License in March 2014 and is excited about what the future holds, “I’m learning a whole new area. For so long I’ve worked in a profession that was so exacting, so detailed. Insurance has lots of details too, but it’s not as linear and more open-ended. You have to look at so many options to find the best fit for each customer.”
Andrea grew up in Shelby and became interested in accounting in high school taking classes like Bookkeeping and Accounting I. “As soon as I graduated, I started school at NCTC. I completed my degree in two years and went to work at Ohio Mutual Insurance Company in Bucyrus.”
Her next job was at Hursh Drugs in Mansfield where she stayed for almost 11 years. Of that experience, she remembers, “everyone knew each other and cared about each other. We were like a big family.”
When the economy took a turn and she was downsized, she looked hard for a job, “I sent resumes and had more than 60 interviews, but I was never chosen. I was ready to give up looking for a job using my training and take any job because I needed to work.
“Then I saw the posting online for this job. I really liked that it was a small, intimate office, and the people were friendly. It just felt right to me – like I was meant to be here.”
Andrea’s degree has served her well in a number of jobs and industries. Her friends asked if she missed out by attending NCTC. Her response, “Absolutely not. I wouldn’t change a thing.”
She has a son, Thomas, who attends middle school in Shelby.
Her plans for the future? “I want to keep learning this business and see where it leads me.”
So far, it’s led her to a rewarding career that makes her happy. That’s a worthy goal for her family and customers alike.
