Types of Financial Aid

Financial Aid is money provided to students to help them afford College.

Most aid fits into three categories:

Most, but not all, aid is based on demonstrated financial need, and for the most part college financial aid is provided by federal and state tax payers.

  • You must be seeking to earn a degree or eligible certificate at NC State to receive aid here.  You must also declare a major (the specific academic field you wish to study) to be aid eligible.  Only classes required for your major/degree/eligible certificate count when determining aid eligibility.  If you enroll for courses which are not required for your major, you will have to pay for them out of pocket.    Transient students or those “just taking classes” are not eligible for aid at NC State.
  • It is your responsibility to know what courses are required for your academic program and to know what catalog year determines your course requirements.  Log on to MyNC, and under either Academic Profile or Advising Information select Program Evaluation.  Select your major and hit submit.  The courses required for you to graduate along with the courses you’ve already taken will be displayed.
  • Changes of major, catalog year changes and course requirement substitutions must be made by the Friday of the first week of the semester to be recognized for financial aid purposes for the current semester.

In December 2011 President Obama signed into law the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2012 (Public Law 112-74). This law has significantly impacted the Pell Grant Program.

Beginning in Fall 2012, students are now limited to 12 semesters or (600%) of Pell Grant eligibility during their lifetime. This change affects all students regardless of when or where they received their first Pell Grant.

If you have attended college for 4 years or longer, receiving Pell Grant each year, you are likely to exhaust or have already exhausted your lifetime eligiblity of 12 semesters.
