Cover Letter Don'ts

For assistance with the job search, please contact mrodriguez@ncstatecollege.edu.

  • Don't have any degree of arrogance or cockiness in your cover letter.
  • Don't send out a general or blanket cover.  Customize it to fit each position to which you are applying.
  • Don't make it too long or too short.  If it is more than one page it is too long.
  • Don't rewrite your resume.
  • Don't send your resume without a complete spelling and grammar check.
  • Don't be wordy.
  • Don't forget to sign your letter.
  • Don't address the person by their first name unless you have already received permission to do so.
  • Don't use slang or technical jargon.
  • Don't exaggerate your experience or say things you can not back up in the interview.
