Core Learning Outcome:
Communication

Written communication depends not only on grammatical and organizational skills, but also on reading comprehension and the ability to analyze, adapt, and react to texts. Therefore, the writing curriculum at North Central State College moves from the personal essay, through response to readings, to the research essay.  Moreover, written communication is an essential component of any contemporary career; therefore, skill in written communication should be demonstrated within the student’s chosen career.

Measurable Objectives:

Upon graduating, North Central State College students should be able to do the following:

            Write a well-organized, well-developed, well-expressed personal essay.

            Write an essay in response to a written argument and/or literary text.

            Write a researched essay in a standard academic format (APA or MLA).

            Write an appropriate essay or report within an appropriate course in the student’s chosen career.

Assessment Plans:

To assess written communication, the College, under the direction of the English Department, has established the following assessment components::

1.  Entrance and Exit Grammar scores.

2.  In ENG 114, 80% of students will receive a score of 75 or higher on their literary analytical essays.

3. In ENG-200 level courses, 80%+ of students will receive a 75 or higher on their research paper.

4.  All programs will assess one major essay using the WAC rubric in their capstone courses.  80% of students will be expected to receive a score of 80 or higher on their capstone essay.  Results will be reported every other year.

5.  English Department faculty will evaluate randomly selected capstone course essays using the WAC rubric every other year.

5.  The CCSSE survey will be administered every other year to capture and evaluate communication skills from the data.

Speech is the effective communication of ideas and concepts to a listening audience. Therefore, the Speech curriculum at North Central State College focuses on the public presentation of information.  Moreover, speech communication is an essential component of any contemporary career; therefore, skill in speech communication should be demonstrated within the student’s chosen career.

Measurable Objectives:

Upon graduating, North Central State College students should be able to do the following:

Make an effective spoken presentation of an idea to a general audience
Make an effective spoken to an audience in the student’s chosen career field.

Assessment Plans:

1.  80%+ of students in SPE 101 should be able to score 75 or better on their final speech.

2.  80%+ of students should be able to score 75 or better on their SpAC presentation.

3.  Presentations will be evaluated by career program faculty in capstone courses using the SpAC rubric.  Results will be reported every other year.

4.  Speech Department faculty will evaluate randomly selected capstone course (taped) presentations using the SpAC rubric every other year.

5.  The CCSSE survey will be administered every other year to capture and evalute communication skills from the data.
