Presidential Profile
North Central State College’s (NCState’s) Board of Trustees invites applications and nominations for the position of President. The President is the chief executive officer of the college and reports to the Board of Trustees. NCState is a public, two-year, community-based, educational institution co-located with the Ohio State University at Mansfield and serving the residents of north central Ohio. NCState offers high quality, technical education in more than 60 associate degree and certificate programs in Health, Business, Public Service, and Engineering Technologies, as well as customized workforce training programs. The College enrolls 3500 students quarterly and is the largest public college within a 60 mile radius. Chartered in 1961, NCState is successfully participating in the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) accreditation process of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools’ (NCA’s) Higher Learning Commission and the national Achieving the Dream initiative for institutional improvement, for its quality initiatives.
In the next President, the Board is seeking an individual who successfully demonstrates the following leadership characteristics and qualities:
- Commitment to the two-year college mission and a vision for the role of the two-year college in the community and state of Ohio.
- Leadership style that builds confidence and trust both on the campus and in the community and whose leadership models honesty, openness, consensus building, and teamwork.
- Commitment to student-centered learning, quality instruction, academic excellence and services that support student success and retention.
- Commitment to the value of and the respect for a diverse student body and faculty/staff.
- Competence in planning, assessment, budgeting, financial management, and resource development.
- Experience or familiarity with AQIP and the national Achieving the Dream initiative.
- Leadership experience in the development, maintenance, and strengthening of existing and new programs in partnership with the college’s various constituencies.
- Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills and experience with public advocacy and fundraising.
- Successful leadership and management experience at the executive level that required significant decision-making responsibility. Evidence of increasing responsibility levels in one’s professional career.
Qualifications: An earned doctorate preferred; master’s degree from an accredited institution required.
Opportunities and Challenges: Building on a strong history of serving students and the community of the region, the next President of NCState will have the opportunity to lead the College in a number of areas, including the following:
- To be part of implementing NCState’s role in Ohio’s strategic plan for higher education. (See the Chancellor’s strategic plan at universitysystem.ohio.gov/ .)
- To further develop NCState’s leadership in collaborative efforts with local high schools and other institutions of higher education in such programs as the P-16 initiative, the CollegeNOW program, and College Tech-Prep.
- To continue to foster collaborative efforts with the co-located Ohio State University at Mansfield.
- To participate in the Governor’s plan to increase the number of students in Ohio’s higher education system by 230,000 students in 10 years. Community and technical colleges will be in the forefront of much of this growth.
- To foster a renewed sense of the role of faculty and staff in governance of the institution and to create an environment where each employee understands the importance of her or his contributions to student-centered learning.
- To foster an environment in which the faculty’s role in the development of new programs and the enhancement of the existing curriculum is more fully recognized.
- To further enhance NCState’s image and the importance of its role in the community.
- To continue to develop NCState’s critical role in the economic growth and workforce development for businesses and the health care service industry of the region and the state.
- To help the college in its continued evolution from a strong technical college to a strong comprehensive community college.
- To guide the campus community toward its vision for the future and to effectively communicate that vision to all constituencies so that it is realized.
- To work with NCState’s Foundation in carrying out a major capital campaign starting in 2009.
- To lead an institution that will be working with its first collectively bargained contract for full-time faculty.
- To further promote continuous improvement efforts across the organization.

These four documents will be the only application information that will be presented to the Search Committee.
