Mentors Guided North Central State Grad Escalera to School Counseling Career
Willard native Crystal Escalera, a 1999 Human Services graduate of North Central State College, credits her educational and career path to the many mentors who provided guidance and encouragement to her throughout her life. Her mentors – from her sixth grade teacher to school counselors and administrators at Pioneer Career and Technology Center, from employers to North Central State’s Mark Monnes and David Cardwell, Crystal was encouraged by their influence and gained confidence in her abilities. Crystal graduated from high school in 1996 after attending Pioneer. Like thousands of others, she began her college path at North Central State where she earned her associate degree, then enrolled in the distance learning program at the University of Cincinnati, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 2003. Because of Cardwell’s influence, Crystal then enrolled in Heidelberg College, graduating in 2005 with a Master’s Degree in counseling. “Attending North Central State College was a great option for me. It’s close to home, small setting, cost effective, and I could transfer to another college after earning my associate degree,” Crystal said. “North Central State College gave me the foundation that I needed to succeed in furthering my education, and it helped me prepare for the work load that earning Bachelor and Master Degrees would require.” Crystal credits North Central State’s outstanding faculty for much of her success and feels connected to North Central State College more than the other colleges she attended. Crystal believes in lifelong learning and plans to begin pursuing her doctorate in education in the near future. The daughter of Ana and Frank Fabela of Willard, Crystal resides in Willard with her husband, Juan.
