Before proposal is considered by the committee:
  1. The initiator of the proposal, must fill out a course proposal form, which is generally accompanied by a course syllabus and/or other supporting documentation.
  2. The initiator of the proposal must then consult everyone who will be affected by the change. The proposal form provided by the committee includes a checklist of individuals and departments to be consulted prior to presenting a proposal to the committee. The checklist includes the following:
    a. All department members in the department in which the course will be housed.
    b. All other departments which will be affected by the change.
    c. The deans and/or chairpersons of the academic divisions.
    d. Other departments which have related courses as a part of their programs, including the general education departments.
    e. The Registrar.

The committee receives a copy of a proposal one week before that proposal is presented to the committee.

Presentation to the Committee:
The initiator of the proposal, generally accompanied by his or her dean, then makes a formal presentation to the committee. The committee discusses the proposal and either passes it, rejects it, or sends it back for reconsideration. The object of this study is to make certain, in regard to each proposal, that the minimum requirements of the college are met in relation to such things as the number of hours in each program, attendance requirements, grading guidelines, and so on. The committee also considers how the proposal will affect areas outside the initiator's area of responsibility. For instance, the committee could look at such things as the impact of the proposal on general education requirements, the course load that may be placed on other departments by the proposal, the logistics of implementing the proposal, the requirements of the Ohio Board of Regents, and so on.

Committee Proposal Approval Criteria:

1. The submission of a properly and fully completed curriculum/program proposal form (with course syllabi when applicable.)
2. Compliance with OBR policies.
3. Compliance with internal academic policies, such as the basic requirements for general education.
4. Compliance with
the mission of the college.

The committee will also look at other general items to avoid such problems as the unnecessary duplication of courses that already exist within the curricular inventory and/or an excessive, undue conflict with or burden upon another academic department or departments.

After a proposal has passed the committee:
The Proposal then goes to
the Academic Council (AC) for further consideration and approval. After being approved by the AC the proposal goes to the President's Staff for final consideration and approval to be implemented in the following academic year.
