Students in this major take a mix of computer classes and graphic design classes.

What You Will Learn

This degree provides cross-training in print advertising, video production, and web page building. Students will learn to apply technology to assemble graphics, text, sound and multimedia to communicate a message.

Students are provided a balance of design theory and technical production. The goal is to give students the ability to foster creative ideas as well as produce final work.

Although many visual communications media are studied, there is also an opportunity to specialize in one media.

  • Graphic Design Track
    The Graphic Design Track is more specific to graphic design and print skills. Classwork focuses on page design, typography, digital image manipulation, and printing.
  • Video/Animation Track
    The Video Animation Track focuses on video editing, animation, visual effects and audio production.
  • Web Design Track
    The Web Design Track focuses on dynamic web page scripting, CSS styling, handling database communication, and web site management.
  • Digital Arts Track
    The Digital Arts Track finishes out the Visual Communications degree as a general, well-rounded degree with equal focus on all media.

Where You Could Go

Graduates in Visual Communications and Media Technology will find employment and freelance opportunities in service businesses like advertising agencies and multimedia companies, as well as in the marketing/public relations departments of corporations.

NC State has transfer agreements with the University of Findlay and Bowling Green State University. Students who continue on to a four year degree can receive their Bachelor of Fine Art Degree.
