North Central State College has been involved in the national Achieving the Dream student success initiative since 2006. Achieving the Dream seeks to help more students earn postsecondary credentials, including occupational certificates and degrees. Recognizing that community college students often take a long time to earn certificates or degrees, Achieving the Dream works with institutions to improve student progression through intermediate milestones.
The Developmental Education Initiative is an outgrowth of Achieving the Dream. It is a three-year national effort funded to expand groundbreaking remedial/developmental education programs. NC State was one of 15 colleges nationally to receive a grant in 2009 of approximately $750,000 from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to bring several interventions begun under Achieving the Dream to scale.
