DMT 102 - INTRODUCTION TO GRAPHIC DESIGN
3 credit hours; 2 class hours; 2 lab hours
An introduction to the elements and principles of digital graphic design as they are applied to print, web, and video production. The leading computer software applications will be used to explore the processes of design and layout of different types of documents and media. This introductory course provides an overview of design typography and the courses in the Digital Media Technology department.
Course work includes an introduction to the vocabulary and production processes necessary to create images for printing, web design, and video, including desktop scanning and resolution. Using the leading computer soft ware applications, students will explore raster and vector based imagery, illustration, photo restoration, color correction and image compositing.
Designed to build on knowledge of web design from DMT 110 Multimedia Communications. Current web design workflow, best practices for web design, software and languages for building web sites will be covered. Students will build at least one web site using the current industry standard web design software. Web sites will contain images, text, navigation and interactivity. Students should be comfortable with image editing software.

This course presents an overview of related hardware and software for audio productions and editing. Such aspects as audio theory, microphones, sound design, mixing, processing and multi-track recording will be employed.

An introduction to basic multimedia development which includes integration of text, graphics, sound, video, animation, and interactivity. Study includes sound editing, screen design for film, video, multimedia, the study of time based issues in planning for multimedia design and animation, including storyboarding, and flowcharting. Design issues will be covered, as well as supporting software, including authoring software, for sound, video, and multimedia.
Principles of planning and problem solving as it applies to web site design and development in business. Introduction to Web servers, databases, and object oriented programming. Topics include flowcharts basic input-output routines client server applications, Introduction to PHP, and database integration and execution.
Builds on the skills learned in DMT 109 and allows the student a chance for further in-depth hands-on experiences in producing radio programs for the College's radio station. The student is expected to participate as a staff member of the station for two hours per week in producing a weekly program.
Building on previous skills learned, students will use leading industry software for web design. Such topics as file transfer protocol (FTP) methods, web site management, creation of frames, layers, tables, dynamic server page contact, and databases will be covered. Course components include further exploration of web-based interactivity, cascading style sheets (CSS), video, audio, graphics, and animation, introduces the essential concepts that support electronic business sites.

Expanding on student‘s knowledge of graphic design elements and principles covered in DMT 102, students will further explore print production design. Emphasis will be on typography for layout and design. History of typography, graphic design, and printing processes are studied. Projects include advertisements, logos, brochures, and other methods of printed mass media communication.

Continues to expand on the vocabulary and production processes learned in DMT 105. Emphasis will be on raster based images produced from the leading graphic software applications. Digital photography, developing images for the Internet, and more complex compositing techniques will be covered.

An introduction to the elements and principles of photograph y as they are applied to print, web, and video production. This course will provide theory and practical aspects of taking well-composed photographs that visually communicate a message. Students must provide camera and film or a digital equivalent camera with manual focus setting preferred.
Introduction to the concepts and processes utilized in the production of art work with digital tools. A variety of techniques are explored for story boarding, basic illustration, frame animation tweening, interactivity, publishing and exporting animation.

A study of digital illustration which includes text effects, fill patterns, bezier/vector based drawing, information graphics, technical illustrations, and cartography for print.

An overview of the major printing processes including offset lithography, large format inkjet, digital printing and screen process. Printing materials and finishing techniques will be included. Hands on experience printing in the lab will be required.
Includes a further study of development and evaluation of effective animation, using a 3-D application, modeling, polygons vertex maps, lighting, camera management, and story boarding techniques.

Covers advanced imaging techniques. Students will produce samples for their portfolio that demonstrate their skills in image manipulation, including advanced color correction, advanced photo retouching techniques, and photo montage.

Students will build on previous scripting and database skills working with server side communication. Aspects such as FTP, Apache, Linux, SQL, MySQL will be discussed.

Designed to allow the student to recognize and employ the creative and technical elements of visual effects. Manipulating live action video with computer generated imagery and animation is at the heart of this course.

Explores the concepts, terminology, skills and processes utilized in planning, shooting, and editing video. Advanced editing skills based on those previously learned in the DMT 110 Multimedia Communications course class will be explored.

A continuation of DMT 118 and provides for further in-depth, hands-on experiences in producing programs for the College's radio station. The student is expected to participate as a management member and staff member of the station for two hours per week in producing weekly programs.
Centers on creating effective, computer-based training materials. Topics covered will include effective CBT design and development of principles, types of CBT materials, and learning theory and its application to training materials. Students will design course materials from scratch, as well as support materials.
Builds a basic understanding of character animation, environments, and special effects in addition to developing a solid foundation in using a 3-D animation software. Students will have an opportunity to enlarge their portfolio with various hands-on projects.

Applies student‘s knowledge of graphic design, imaging and copywriting to prepare multi-page documents for publication using master pages and style sheets. Advanced typesetting, copy fitting, tables, variable data, and page design for print and online distribution will be covered. Possible projects include newspapers, newsletters, magazines, brochures, catalogs and other multi-page or multi-version publications. Projects will also include online distribution projects that are generated from graphic design software including interactive documents or pdf publications, and email campaigns. Xml and variable data will be used to generate documents. Students will understand print publishing and cross publishing workflows.

Designed to take a multimedia project idea from concept to finished product. Students will be expected to utilize all skills acquired in the DMT program to assemble an electronic portfolio of their work which can be used for employment interviews. Other topics including interviewing and resumes will be covered. Taken within 20 credit hours of graduation.

Students will earn college credit while attaining practical work experience. This experience compliments the formal classroom instruction. The work experience is coordinated by a faculty member who visits the job site for a conference with the supervisor. This course must be taken within 20 credit hours of graduation.

Builds on the foundations made in the DMT140 Photography course. Emphasis will be made on studio photography and advanced skills and techniques as well as various photographic styles. Students must provide their own SLR camera with manual capabilities.
Must be taken concurrently with D M T 240. Students will be presented with the functions and procedures of the workplace. Work experiences will be used as a basis for discussion. This course must be taken within 20 credit hours of graduation.
Presents a specific topic in Digital Media Technology (DMT) that is not normally covered in the current DMT curriculum. Credit hours and topics will be pre-approved by the academic administration.
