COMPASS Placement Assessment

In order for the Student Success Center to fulfill its mission of helping students reach their full potential here at the College, it is important for our academic advisors to be able to recommend courses that accurately “fit” the students’ needs and abilities.  To that end, we require that all new students go through our new student assessment process so that we can find out where their academic skills stand in the areas of Reading, Writing, and Math.

Currently we use the COMPASS computerized test to allow students to work at their own pace through the series of tests.  We encourage students to take their time when testing and to take breaks as often as needed.  We remind students that this is one series of tests that you simply cannot fail -- or pass!  The sole purpose of the test is to tell us -- and you -- where your skills are as you begin your academic career.

Take a look at some sample test questions before you arrive or click here to take a "Practice ACT Test" .  Enter your zip code, and choose Learning Express Library at the bottom of the page.  Click College Entrance Tests.  Choose  "Practice Now" for an English, Math, or Reading practice test.  You will have to create a username and password to save your test results.  You may want to practice, English, math, or reading.  There are two practice tests offered for each of these subjects.

Academic advisors are on hand in the Student Success Center to go over the results of the test.  If you feel the results do not accurately reflect your skill levels in the areas of reading, writing, and math, our advisors will explain the retesting option to you.

While we also have a paper-pencil version of the test available, most students (even those who are a little afraid of computers at first) prefer the computerized version.  The choice, however, is yours!

To take the new student assessment, you need to do three things:

  1. Fill out an application to the College.  Call the Admissions office at (419) 755-4761 for an appointment to meet with an Admissions Representative.

  2. Call the Student Success Center at (419) 755-4764 to schedule a test time for COMPASS.

  3. Show up at the Student Success Center with a photo ID in hand.
