Sony External DVD/CD Burner

CDs were nice while they lasted, right? Some of us are still getting used to the idea that floppies are being phased out in favor of CDs and Disk On Key type thingies. But alas, technology sleeps for no one.

As file sizes continue to expand and digital video continues to explode, "writable" DVD technology has also sprung up.

The math is amazing...our departed friend, the good ole floppy disk held 1.4Mb (Mb=Megabyte) of info. Now our writable CD-R and RW discs hold 650-800Mb of info which means one cd-r or Rw disc can hold  450 to 550 floppy disks' worth of info. But these whippersnapper DVD discs can hold 4.7 GIGABYTES of info per disc. So one DVD disc can hold 3,357 floppy discs' worth of information!

The only glitch is the format. Much like when VHS & Betamax videocassettes came on the market, there are two competing Writable standards, DVD "-" & DVD "+" However, our Sony drive talks in either language, neatly sidestepping this issue.

Further, this external drive is smart enough that it can also function as a cd burner to put information onto CD-R and CD-RW discs.

What This Equipment Can Be Used For:

This drive be used to create DVDs that contain massive amounts of information. This can be particularly useful with a video project which may chafe against the measly 700Mb of a plain CD-R disc.

Further, the portability of the drive allows it to function as a loaner cd-burner for other computers as well.
