IMPACT OF MANDATORY MATH PLACEMENT ON PROGRAMS IN THE HEALTH AND PUBLIC SERVICE DIVISION

Mandatory Math Placement Is Effective Beginning Winter Quarter, 2007 (October 5, 2006)

A. HEALTH PROGRAMS

1. Radiological Sciences

a. Pre-Radiological Sciences students (Pre-RD Majors) who are not on the Radiological Sciences Wait List prior to January 2, 2007 will be impacted by the Mandatory Math Placement. Prior to January 2, 2007, students can meet the Wait List algebra requirement by having had algebra in High School (grade of C minus or higher) or by taking MTH103 (transfer credit or grade of C minus or higher). Beginning January 2, 2007 students either must have taken MTH103 (transfer credit or grade of C minus or higher) or get a Numeric Score (NU) of 61 or higher and an Algebra Score (AL) of 31 or higher on COMPASS in order to meet the Wait List algebra requirement. High School Algebra can no longer be used to meet the Wait List algebra requirement. In addition, if these students want to enroll in MTH121, having taken High School Algebra will no longer meet prerequisite requirements. Students must have taken MTH103 (transfer credit or grade of C minus or higher) or on the COMPASS test have a NU score of 61 or higher and an AL score of 31 or higher.

b. Pre-Radiological Sciences students (Pre-RD Majors) who are already on the Waiting List prior to January 2, 2007 will not be impacted by the Mandatory Math Placement. Students who have met the Wait List Algebra requirement by having had High School Algebra and who do not have a minimum COMPASS Numeric Scores (NU) of 61 and Algebra Score (AL) of 31 will not be affected. These students will be permitted to remain on the Wait List. A Goal Attainment Plan (GAP) will be put on the system that will permit them to take MTH121 even if their COMPASS scores indicate the need for remedial math courses. Students with the low COMPASS scores may elect on their own to take the remedial math classes, but they are not required. If a student is taken off the Wait List and then wants to take MTH121 or get back on the list, they will have to meet the Mandatory Math Placement requirements as described in 1a above.

c. Radiological Sciences students (RD Majors) who are already in their clinical sequence of courses (as of Fall, 2006) will not be impacted by the Mandatory Math Placement. But, any students who do not continue with the sequence and elect to go back on the Wait List will have to follow the new guidelines for getting on the list as described in 1a above.

d. Special Note: All Radiological Sciences students (pre-RD or RD Majors) who have transfer credit or a grade of C minus or higher in MTH121 or MTH130 will not be affected by the Mandatory Math Placement.

2. Respiratory Care

a. Pre-Respiratory Care students (Pre-RT Majors) who are not on the Respiratory Care Wait List prior to January 2, 2007 will be impacted by the Mandatory Math Placement. High School Algebra will also no longer meet the prerequisite requirements of PHY114. Effective Winter Quarter 2007 the prerequisite requirement for PHY114 is MTH121 (transfer credit or grade of C minus or higher), or MTH103 (transfer credit or grade of C minus or higher), or COMPASS NU score of 61 or higher and AL score of 31 or higher.

b. Pre-Respiratory Care students (Pre-RT Majors) who are already on the Waiting List prior to January 2, 2007 will not be impacted by the Mandatory Math Placement. Students who have met the Wait List algebra requirement by having had High School Algebra and who do not have a minimum COMPASS Numeric Scores (NU) of 61 and Algebra Score (AL) of 31 will not be affected. These students will be permitted to remain on the Wait List. A Goal Attainment Plan (GAP) will be put on the system that will permit them to take MTH121 and PHY114 even if their COMPASS scores indicate the need for remedial math courses. Students with the low COMPASS scores may elect on their own to take the remedial math classes, but they are not required. If a student is taken off the Wait List and then wants to take MTH121, PHY114 or get back on the Wait List, they will have to meet the Mandatory Math Placement requirements as described in 2a above.

c. Respiratory Care students (RT Majors) who are already in their technical sequence of courses (as of Fall, 2006) will not be impacted by the Mandatory Math Placement. But, any students who do not continue with the sequence and elect to go back on the Wait List will have to follow the new guidelines for getting on the list as described in 2a above.

d. Special Note: Respiratory Care students (pre-RT or RT Majors) who have transfer credit or a grade of C minus or higher in MTH121 (or MTH130) and PHY114 will not be affected by the Mandatory Math Placement.

3. Physical Therapist Assistant

a. Pre-Physical Therapist Assistant students (Pre-PTA Majors) who will be applying and are accepted to start the technical PTA classes in the summer of 2007 will not be affected by the Mandatory Math Placement. Students who are accepted to start the technical PTA classes in the summer of 2007 will have a Goal Attainment Plan (GAP) put on the system that will permit them to take MTH121 and PHY114 even if their COMPASS scores indicate the need for remedial math courses.

b. Pre-Physical Therapist Assistant students (Pre-PTA Majors) who will compete to start the program beginning in the summer of 2008 or later will be affected by the Mandatory Math Placement. For these students having taken High School Algebra will no longer meet the math requirement. Instead, students must have taken MTH103 (transfer credit or grade of C minus or higher) or get a Numeric Score (NU) of 61 or higher and an Algebra Score (AL) of 31 or higher on COMPASS.

c. Physical Therapist Assistant students (PTA Majors) who are already in their technical sequence of courses (as of Fall, 2006) will not be affected by the Mandatory Math Placement as long as they remain in the program.

5. Associate Degree Nursing

a. Pre-Associate Degree Nursing students (Pre-RN Majors) who are not on the Associate Degree Nursing Wait List prior to January 2, 2007 will be affected by the Mandatory Math Placement. High School Algebra can no longer be used to meet the Wait List algebra requirement.

b. Pre-Associate Degree Nursing students (Pre-RN Majors) who are already on the Wait List prior to January 2, 2007 will not be affected by the Mandatory Math Placement. Students who have met the Wait List Algebra requirement by having had High School Algebra and who do not have a minimum COMPASS Numeric Scores (NU) of 61 and Algebra Score (AL) of 31 will not be affected. These students will be permitted to remain on the Wait List. Students with the low COMPASS scores may elect on their own to take the remedial math classes, but they are not required. If a student is taken off the Wait List and then wants to get back on the list, they will have to meet the Mandatory Math Placement requirements as described in 6a above.

c. Associate Degree Nursing students (RN Majors) who are already in their clinical sequence of courses (as of Fall, 2006) will not be impacted by the Mandatory Math Placement. But, any students who do not continue with the sequence and elect to go back on the Wait List will have to follow the new guidelines for getting on the list as described in 5a above.
