Curriculum Changes

Students generally follow the curriculum which is contained in the most recent catalog that is available during their first quarter of enrollment. That curriculum should be followed as much as possible, even if subsequent catalogs contain curriculum changes.

It is possible, however, that some students may not be able to pursue continuous enrollment. For these students, the following policy is used:

Students away from the College for three, consecutive quarters (excluding summer, except for those curricula with required summer terms) will follow the curriculum in place when they return. Students who have been away for one quarter or two, consecutive quarters (excluding summers, except for those curricula with required summer terms) will be given the option of completing any curriculum in place during their attendance at the College. However, the student’s file will initially be checked for graduation based on the curriculum at the time of original matriculation.

Over a period of time, curricula will change in order to meet technological needs. As a result, some courses are dropped from a program, and others are added. Advice concerning course substitutions can be obtained from the appropriate division dean. Course substitutions may be made only as a result of problems created by curriculum changes.

Academic credits (either NC State or external) that are older than eight years will be evaluated with special care. Their acceptance toward an NC State certificate or degree may be denied based upon changes in the field of study. In addition, some restricted admission programs at the College apply their own special requirements related to the age of academic credits. For further information, contact the program director of the appropriate program or the division dean.
